Fumar porque somos machos y porque es barato / Smoking because we are male and because it is cheap

Vivimos en un mundo donde fumar ha pasado de moda e intentamos erradicar el humo provenga de donde provenga. Sin embargo, encontramos un país en el que hay 15,3 millones de fumadores!! En Vietnam, casi el 50% de la población adulta es fumadora y el precio del tabaco es, en gran medida, el culpable de estos altos índices.

En el 2010 se aprobó una ley antitabaco que prohíbe fumar en espacios públicos como hospitales, oficinas y colectivos. En el 2016 se reformó esta misma ley incluyendo la prohibición de campañas publicitarias de tabaco y la inclusión de advertencias en las cajas de cigarrillos pero, pese al esfuerzo del gobierno por reducir el consumo de tabaco en el país, la realidad es bien distinta. En Vietnam se fuma en todas partes.

Y cuando decimos en "todas partes" es totalmente literal. No hay ley que valga. No hay normativa, no hay regulaciones. Podes estar cenando tranquilamente en un restaurante y los hombres fumando como si nada. Podes estar esperando por una habitación en un hostel/albergue/homestay, y habrá un tipo fumando al lado tuyo.

En los espacios públicos y en los privados. En los trenes, en las estaciones, en donde te imagines y donde no, también.

Hombres fumadores. Siempre se les ve a ellos. Machos con alcohol y cigarros. Ellos, demostrando su hombría ahí, con un pucho consumiendoles las neuronas.

Resulta ser que las mujeres acá no pueden fumar. En este país donde lo ilegal es legal las mujeres son fuertemente juzgadas si llegan a osar prenderse un puchito. Está muy mal vista esta práctica en mujeres por lo que ni siquiera lo intentan. Ni siquiera saben si les gusta o no, pues no pueden darse el gusto de la mareada de la primera pitada.

No solo se fuman cigarrillos comerciales, sino que también se inhala el humo de una pipa gigante, llena de un tabaco muy fuerte, a la que llaman thuoc lao. Una sola inhalada de esta pipa equivale a un atado de cigarrillos. Sí, así de fuerte es. Tanto que en muchos lugares se lo utiliza como pesticida.

Te imaginas estar fumandote un pesticida? Sin embargo es una práctica muy común entre los hombres de Vietnam y que invitan a lxs turistxs a probar. Así que si estas leyendo esto, te recomendamos que no la fumes.

We live in a world where smoking has gone out of style and we try to eradicate smoke wherever it comes from. However, we found a country in which there are 15.3 million smokers!
